Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What can I add or do to make ramen noodles tasty on a budget?
3·8 days agoEast Meets Southwest: Discard packet. Combine about 3/4 cup salsa (a whole cup if salsa is chunky) and 2 teaspoons soy sauce. May add about 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, if desired. Cook noodles, drain and add to sauce.
I’ve made this since the late 90s. If you like both Southwestern and Asian cuisines, you might like this.

11·10 days agoMy mother used to say “If wishes were horses,” and I had no idea where that came from. I didn’t get internet until after her death in 2001. I looked up that saying and the complete version is, " If wishes were horses then beggars would ride. " Apparently, it’s a very old saying so I guess adults weren’t always gross.
Oh, the poor gerbil!

The “Rex” in T-Rex means “king” in Latin. Therefore, the female T-Rex’s name should be Regina, which means “Queen” in Latin.
You know what you need to do --end the relationship. It’s only going to get worse. Never let someone abuse you if you don’t absolutely have to. There might be times that you’ll miss her but someone like that will escalate their abuse if you endure it.

Oddly enough, that was my first thought too.
It’s a common thing in this house. Both my roommate and myself do it. I’m a frequent midnight snacker. Roommate’s son isn’t though. It’s weird to me that you’ve never known anyone who doesn’t. Maybe it’s an American thing. I don’t know.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most unforgivable sin done in media that you're still bitter about?
35·24 days agoWhen I was 11, I was annoying my mom a lot so naturally, she lunged at me with a butchers knife.
When I was 16, she beat me in the head with her fists.
I’m 55 now and she died when I was 30. You know what’s weird? I wish she had stabbed me when I was 11. She would have had to explain that. Then again, if someone had seen her threaten me for once. My half-sister saw her beat me in the head with her fists and Mama suffered no consequences so she probably wouldn’t have then either.

I’ve never met a Don or Donald that was a nice person. Seriously. And I’m old.

I’m old enough to remember when they tried to convert us to metric. I can tell you why.
People tried to force it on us and we don’t need the metric system for daily use. Trying to force people to use it isn’t going to work. Now, personally, I’d prefer if measurements on rulers and in cars were still given in both systems.
Metric advocates tend to be smug and insulting towards anyone not using the metric system. I have seen this myself more than once. Calling a whole nation stupid because they use a different but functional system of measurement is hardly a good strategy for converting them to your system.
I learned the metric system in school. I understand that the metric system is superior in many sciences. I have strong interests in anthropology. And here I am at 55 and I have never, not once, needed to use metric. Bone measurements are often given in metric but it’s not such a big issue that I need to wholly convert to metric.
My question is, what’s the big deal? Is the metric system a religion? I’ve seen evangelical Christians less intent on converting people. Why?
