I’m glad to be aware of FOSS alternatives nowadays for pretty much any service I use/require.

I would never pay these prices for a password manager (not even the initial price), specially considering my sensitive data would be sent to a 3rd party company through a closed source project which no one can verify.

Even using Bitwarden free (which admittedly I use for convenience) is not exactly comfortable to me, even being mostly open source. I’m constantly considering moving back to KeePass as I used to do some years ago.

OP issue with Ethernet might actually be related to Windows fast startup.

And other than that, the issue OP is facing is pretty much not knowing what to choose in a plethora of options. Installing most modern distros nowadays is pretty damn easy, specially if you’re not trying to dual boot with Windows (which is also a Windows problem, not Linux).

And installing a Linux Distro does not require you to hack your way to bypass shit like TMP2 / CPU cutoff or an account creation, which are unnecessarily imposed by MS.

Out of curiosity I did some research, and the ones that seems to come closer to me aesthetically are ‘Retro Interface’ and ‘Analog Sci-Fi UI’, mixed with something like ‘Dark Aero’ (similar to PS3 UI).

It’s probably not a single style, but a mixture of different ideas.

Edit: Actually not so much Analog Sci-Fi, but definitely something like Retro/CRT Interface + Dark Aero.

It might sound stupid, but turn off your PC, switch off the power supply, remove the power cable, wait for about 30-40 seconds, then plug the cable back, switch it on and power on your desktop.

It might be an issue caused by Windows fast startup. Even though you completely removed Windows, the power state might still be ‘hanging’ around and causing issues.

I mean, if they were questioning their sexuality, then obviously they’re not sure. So your question was redundant and out of place to say the least.

Also, as already said in this thread, people don’t generally challenge heterosexuals regarding their actual experiences. So challenging a bisexual/homosexual person about how they feel regarding their sexuality based on their actual experience with other partners does indeed feel like an invalidation and therefore disrespectful.

And at last, on the internet, for many different reasons, it’s quite normal that a debate becomes hyperbolic. But dismissing the situation telling people they’re oversensitive and privileged because of your own lack of tact to deal with the situation doesn’t help your case either.

I think the main problem here, after all, is your ego. Despite your accounts and “your” “content” being deleted by different administrators of different Lemmy communities, and despite the community itself, in this very thread, telling you’re wrong, you still act as if we all are a vocal minority of machiavellian Reddit secret agents working to destroy Lemmy.

It’s not an honest debate if you’re not ready to actually listen to criticism and do some self reflection. If all you do is to repeat these same severely flawed arguments over and over, then talking to you is like beating our head against a brick wall… it will do no good.

I don’t start threads because I prefer to engage in conversations that are already happening. Writing a thoughtful, contextual reply takes infinitely more human effort than running a script that copy-pastes a Reddit headline.

We don’t need millions of users spamming Reddit leftovers to attract ‘native content’. If new users show up and find out that 80% of their feed is Reddit reposts, they won’t see it as a good place to stay, they will see it as a sort of RSS feed to Reddit. And if they want to engage with Reddit’s original content, they will go back to Reddit and discuss it there.

You say Reddit has excellent content and we just need to curate it, but your actions show the exact opposite… You clearly don’t ask yourself (and neither does your automation script) if what you’re about to repost is relevant to that specific community, or if it will add any value. And when the community admins stop you from spamming useless or valueless ‘content’, actually curating stuff, you get frustrated.

And no, I never said more users means lower quality content. I’m saying more activity is not the same as higher quality. These are two completely different statements. And no one is saying they don’t want more content either (as you mentioned in quotation marks in your edit to OP). What I (and many others here) am saying is that we don’t necessarily want more content, we want good content. Why is that so hard for you to understand?

And why do you think ‘Lemmy’ has the interest of having millions of users regurgitating the same low quality shit from Reddit? What do you think ‘Lemmy’ (the actual community administrators that banned your accounts and your ‘content’) would gain from it?

It works on Reddit because they literally make money out of it. They don’t care about the quality of the content. Lemmy is the opposite: getting flooded/hammered by low content shit makes admins lose time and money, and it also make the whole community worse.

No thanks! I’d rather Lemmy/Piefed to grow organically than allowing non-credited ‘oc’ posts directly from Reddit or get it spammed with useless content.

I’m sorry to break it to you, but you’re NOT doing Lemmy any favor. We (and I say ‘we’ because I firmly believe that’s the opinion of most regular Lemmy/Piefed users) do NOT want it to become another Reddit. We want it to be better than Reddit.

And being a ‘more active’ community is not necessarily a good thing.

Also, the ‘quadruple’ moderation you described is literally an intended characteristic of the federation. You might not see it as a good thing, because your account is basically an (unflagged) spamming bot account, and that’s exactly what Lemmy wants to avoid.

Have you tried using JDownloader? Copy paste the URL to it, and see if it can scan and find the video. Not sure if that would work, but there’s a good chance.

If it doesn’t work, try yt-dlp.

It seems to me they know what they’re doing: the controversial posts have been nothing but marketing to them.

Up until today I have never heard of it before. But now I’m seeing plenty of discussions around them, most regarding controversies.

That being said, regardless of their political instances (that does seem to be terrible, although I have no interest in diving deeper), there’s nothing there that smells good to me when it comes to what I would expect from a FOSS/Linux project.

I wanted to be a professional illustrator. Nowadays I barely illustrate as a hobby. Although I still enjoy it I don’t really have the skills for it.

I’m a lawyer and a programmer though. For many years I hated being a lawyer, but I would say that I’ve finally reached a point in my life and career where I’m happy with it.

It was much better. I wouldn’t say it is anymore though. Fundamentally they’re different beasts: facebook/instagram/tiktok/x are focused on personal interactions while reddit is based on topical interests.

I much prefer the less personal and more collaborative nature of a social platform like reddit than the personal nature of most popular social media, but unfortunately, when it comes to predatory business practices, reddit, instagram, facebook, x, tiktok, etc. are all the same shit now.

I don’t really like Gnome as a desktop interface. Not sure why but never really adapted well to it.

Love KDE and Cinnamon though. Probably because I was used to Windows interface for years before I started using Linux.

Also not a fan of needing to subscribe to give feedback (like pointing out FOSS alternatives or false positives).

SteamOS uses an immutable filesystem, and Valve curates the snapshots of the packages before pushing them to the end user. That pretty much removes the entire issue we’re talking about, and is completely different than running rolling release distros.

If you update once or twice a week, chances are there are literally hundreds of packages to upgrade every time. There’s no chance someone will look into every single one of these packages to verify what could potentially ‘break’ their system or not. They just upgrade the whole thing and THEN, if something breaks, they work around it.

As someone who uses CachyOS daily as my main distro, I wouldn’t install it on a device for someone that doesn’t want to do some maintenance from time to time. Maybe I wouldn’t go as far to say that it is UNSTABLE, but point release distros such as Mint or Debian are definitely more stable and require much less maintenance. Rolling release distros are, naturally, much riskier.

I believe it’s a mix. Both ‘nostalgia goggles’ and straight up facts.

What I mean is that, when we were kids or teenagers we didn’t see things the same way our parents did. They were the ones struggling, and we were pretty much just playing around and complaining of mundane stuff. So it’s hard to tell how much ‘easier’ life was back then… we were just young.

But at the same time I do completely agree that the advancement of technology and growth of USA giant corporations really fucked a lot of things up badly. While back in the day we couldn’t find answers or information to everything so easily, we lived a more ‘natural’ life, where everyone actually expected things to take a while to happen: you had to wake up, literally read the news if you wanted, take the car or bus to the job, and just then you started working, and while working you had to do some research and so on.

Nowadays things either happen immediately or you’re tagged as lazy or something like it. You wake up with a lot of e-mails or message notifications on your smartphone, and people expect you to answer these demands ASAP. It’s not expected anymore that we do each thing in it’s own time anymore, and the volume of work is much bigger because you’re expected to solve problems much faster. This volume of demand and unrealistic expectations definitely generate stress and anxiety, which are huge health issues nowadays.

And the fact that we now realize, thanks to the amount and speed of information we have today, how the industry leads are fucking everyone up without consequences doesn’t help in the slightest, since it leads to a feeling of being powerless and exploited.

I love how even modern Linux distros run so damn well on what’s considered today ‘outdated’ hardware.

I love Linux Mint btw! I think you did a great choice! Even though it’s known as the beginner friendly distro, I think it’s just a damn great distro for pretty much anyone, experienced or newbies. Fantastic choice!

I was partially kidding. I mean, sure, if that’s what they want, then what could anyone do about it.

But since they came from Windows, wouldn’t they adapt to something like Linux Mint Xfce or Q4OS (that mimics Windows XP)? These are very lightweight distros.
