Your “they believe that it is damaging to society as a whole” comment is terrifying to me, because a lot of people in power believe that the mere existence of some people is “damaging to society as a whole”.
This. People reaaaaally don’t like that point, but video/fictional stuff should not be held to the same standard as actual, living people. Otherwise, we can kiss goodbye to 90% of the entertainment business. Movies, books, video games, pictures, all of those should be allowed to depict stuff, if only to criticize it.
Unfortunately, too many people think that if they don’t want to see something, no media of it should exist.
It would be very different if actual people were used, or even just their likeness, because then it actually can cause harm and distress. But this? People wasting their time defending pixels are doing only one thing: not defending actual people.

As an European, the “you can’t close your account too fast, this process is mandatory” thing would be a one way to a trial.
Funnily enough, the base unit of weight is actually kilogram. It doesn’t change the fact that we can use other prefixes with gram, but still.
The thing is… this setup works. But is it good? I too find text corrections to be a great application, but thinking about it I’m just blindly accepting most suggestions. I use that tool because I’m not confident enough to double-check my spelling and grammar, so naturally I can’t really double check the tool’s output either.
In areas where I’m way more knowledgeable, the usefulness seems to vanish. Namely, writing code. It’s doing really silly, yet valid things. The only difference is that I can spot them in this case, while on text correction I can’t.

That’s a technicality. The term AI do encompass a TON of things, but it is as irrelevant as saying “crypto” isn’t just the scam machine we know. For most people, it is. And for most people, AI is “Gemini/Claude/ChatGPT”. And telling them the difference isn’t gonna matter at all.
I wonder if some people compiled a list of terms that got so removed from their actual meaning because of advertisement/commercial use. Like, “wifi” is synonymous to “wireless internet access” to so many people, and yet it’s actually not.
It’s incredible how far we’ve got, as far as technology goes. A few months ago, we had to fight to get a device that would not connect to the internet. And now we’re fighting to find software that actually do what it’s supposed to do, and don’t do what it’s not supposed to do.
Can’t wait for the next step. Heck, can’t even imagine what it will be at this point.
Yeah. Someone is running a program. They’re responsible for what the program does. If you decide to run something with zero idea of what will happen, though luck, still your responsibility.
There’s a handful of differences, I’ll leave other point them out.

I recently paid extra to get an A/C with no connectivity. I can feel that. And the only incriminating thing one can get out of my fridge is the smudge of sticky stuff in the bottom drawer, not entire transcripts of the last two weeks -_-

From a technical point of view? It’s just software. If you give a software with semi-random outputs access to control external tools, it will do semi-random stuff and could cause harm. And since the people that loves these little runner also likes to run hundreds of them concurrently, with the ability to spawn more, they can cause harm real fast with no oversight.
If you don’t give them uncontrolled access to anything though? Not much harm in that. But it’s harder to sell the “this is the future of everything” if you put pesky things like checks and limited capabilities for the sake of safety.
So, nothing unique to AI, except the scale of it.
Especially if said denials comes after evidence that they’re doing it in the first place. I wonder what was their train of thoughts here.
Intercepting a verification code with signal does not allow reading messages.
Because sometimes, people are not online 24/7 and messages still need to reach them when possible.
I don’t think we should normalise torture, non-child abuse, exploitation, war, deception, genocide, manipulation, etc. either, but I don’t give a crap if someone make a video of it.
