Why would we want to hear about his “concept of a plan”? Let me know when there’s a decent game out.

Sega needed a comeback. He’s right that a lot of Sega has been conservative for the last few years, but when AAA studios are shitting the bed left and right, companies like Sega and Nintendo manage to capture the magic of gaming like an indie developer can still.

I’ve already appreciated the amount of “fun” Sega brings to the table. Some classic IPs are absolutely batshit too like Kid Chameleon, Vector Man, Virtual On, Comix Zone. There’s so many unique experiences they can make from them.

Hopefully they can maintain focus on fun like a smaller studio but still deliver polished big products.

Dysfunctional diva bullshit is what killed Sega’s hardware business.

And what made Sega spicy was marketing. They noticed how Nintendo countersteered out from the crash by convincing retailers that video games were toys, and instead embraced teen angst and transgressive humor… insofar as one can, using a cartoon animal with an Archie Comics series.

And then Sony did it a thousand times better.

So, the goal is to try and fragment the market further and hope that makes more money that putting out good games, across the current landscape of platforms? I mean, maybe. But, isn’t that exactly the reason Sega gave up on making its own console and started putting games out on other platforms. It works if you are the winner of a console war, otherwise it sucks to be the “also ran”.

They are not talking about a new platform, but finding a more distinct voice as a publisher

Sega had that kind of style [back then]. Sega’s position was like, ‘If you have attitude, Sega’s the company for you, rather than Nintendo’, because of the games, because of the style, because of coolness or the kind of attitude. We have such beautiful content value in Sega, and some other IPs, so we’re trying to revive it with a little bit of the flavour of hip-hop now.
