Doesn’t Tiny Core load into RAM? With 512 MB that could be a problem. There are many versions of Puppy Linux. I think they load into RAM also. I would try MX Linux and see if that worked. Expanding the amount of RAM would be helpful, but it is not worth spending money on that machine. I bought a functioning Fujitsu laptop with a 6th gen Core i5 Processor and 8 GB RAM for $80 on Ebay. Computers with a 7th gen Intel Core Processor or older won’t officially run Windows 11 so they are selling for cheap these days, if you shop around.

It is not important that you can “turn it off”, it is important that it is installed. Off doesn’t mean not running in the background, sucking up your personal information.

Jokes on them! My company made everyone remote during COVID. It worked so well that they sold the corporate office buildings. We are all remote permanently! As long as I work my scheduled hours, they don’t care where in the world I am.

I am forced to use Windows on my work computer, but that is ONLY used for official work related functions. My personal PCs (I have several) all run various flavors of Linux. Monday through Friday I am reminded why I don’t have Windows on my personal machines.

A live linux distro for start, emergency medical information, encrypted container for whatever files you want to take with you. I still wouldn’t carry very sensitive information with you. Banking info, password lists, private partner photos, should all stay at home.

Microsoft will continue to eliminate workarounds. Copilot needs your data for training purposes. Snapshot, Onedrive, mandatory accounts, are all ways of forcing users to give up their data.

I’ve heard from a couple of creators that some of their videos have just disappeared. Few will say much, and none on record, so I think Google is threatening them somehow. Note, the videos I watch on YT are not political or controversial in any way.

I’ve been using Linux since the 90’s. Back then it was frustrating and really couldn’t do much of what I needed done so I had to dual boot with Windows. These days Linux is (in my opinion) MUCH easier to use than Windows. It has been for a few years. The problem really is inertia. The vast majority of hardware is made to work with Windows. Linux does an amazing job of supporting hardware that was not designed to work with Linux, but will never be as seamless until hardware manufacturers support Linux at the same level as Windows. That day may be coming. The EU push for digital sovereignty could get hardware manufacturers to finally support Linux at the same level as Windows. As for Linux phones, they seem to be at the same point Linux OS was in the 90’s. There is a lot of promise, but they still have a lot of development left to do. It is difficult for the community to support such projects when it will take many years to become mature. Again, I am hoping the EU will help as they try to break their dependency on American phone OSes. BTW, I am a supporter of open source. I donate annually.
