Oh, that sounds like a fun project! Going to post it to Lemmy when you’re done? I’m not familiar with proxmox. I see it’s based on Debian, is it basically an os specifically for running vm instances or something?

I like the look of that generation Optiplex. My current main PC is a slightly upgraded XPS 8930, which is IMO one of the ugliest Dell cases. And the airflow has been a terrible challenge. But since it’s not a standard board, I can’t just pop it in a better case. And there’s no way im buying a new mobo for an LGA 1151. So, I’m stuck until I build something new.

  • Same. I really wanted to like Plasma, it’s really nice looking. But it just never works right for me. Most recently, my PC would crash every time I woke it from sleep. And my cursor wouldn’t stay locked to one screen in-game. No issues at all with Cinnamon. Everything just worked out of the box. And there are plenty of themes and icons to dress it up a bit. I used Gnome 2 back in high school, so if I didn’t use Cinnamon I think I’d probably go with MATE since it’s a familiar feel.

  • My wife INSISTS we have a printer, in case she ever wants to print anything. She never does. It has a scanner. Admittedly, a very nice one. I use the scanner every year at tax time. I suggested we get another smaller, lighter scanner. She says we don’t need two scanners. So, for the last 5 years, I have had to lug this 25.7lb behemoth out of the basement to scan like, 6 things, and take it back downstairs. That is all we use it for.

  • I tried FreeCAD last week, and it was absolute trash. Extruding individual curves from a sketch as surfaces? Nah. Extruding multiple bodies from one sketch? Yes, but you can’t select them individually for subsequent operations. Are there synchronous modeling tools? I couldn’t find any. Rotation is terrible no matter which option I tried. If only I could get my SpacePilot Pro working with it. Can you even do any advanced surfacing? I could go on and on.

I was hoping for something akin to SolidWorks, which is kind of a second-teir modeling software in my eyes, but it was just a little better than AutoCAD. Maybe I’m just spoiled with NX. I just found it completely unusable.

  • I’ll be honest and admit that I’ve done that once or twice. It was a Friday, and I went to lunch with a coworker at a pub nearby. He got a lunch beer, so I decided to get a lunch beer. Saw they had Dragonmead Final Absolution on tap, which is one of my favorite beers of all time. Usually, you get it in like, 10oz glasses, its 10% ABV. But the waitress asked if I wanted a short or a tall! I don’t think she was familiar with it. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity like that, so I got a tall. Nursed it throughout lunch. After we paid the bill, I pounded the rest of the 20oz glass. Got back to work, and started feeling it as soon as I put the car in park. It was all I could do not to take a George Costanza style desk nap. Nothing productive was done the rest of the afternoon.

I had a coworker at a different job come to a 1pm meeting and sit next to me, completely reeking of booze. He tried to contribute something, and when he got up to point at something he just stumbled and fell right into the projector screen then onto the floor. My boss asked me later if I noticed anything off about him in there, and I just said it looked like he lost his balance pretty bad, hope he’s OK. Pretty sure he was going through some personal issues at the time, because I never saw him do anything like that again.
