I guess if there is really a human operator, like what Waymo did with having human drivers take over from time to time, all while claiming to be autonomous. Very much this. The level of trust that these companies have in their models was shocking to me before I noticed just how much trust the general population puts into these things. I think that these companies, such as Google and OpenAI need to be held accountable when things go wrong. It should not alway be on the end user. They need to own up to their mistakes. AI needs to be regulated. We also need data privacy and data protection laws. It is insane that am AI can lock you out of all of you data without any human intervention. I know people will say that you should have back ups and I agree, but I that Trina a blind eye to the bigger problem of how much power has been given to these companies. I am particularly not a fan of Google and hope they get broken up, but that is another somewhat unrelated topic.
And it’s not just 200 people in isolation. Their actions were viewed and reported on. Hopefully it gets people thinking about their Google usage. Also yewtu.be is a good alternative to YouTube by the way, so is FreeTube, which at least makes you one step removed from YouTube and using a VPN. I haven’t used Google products willingly in years.
I don’t agree with that poster, but I think far too many people think Google is the only option that exists for many things and would defend Google above all else. Corporate manipulation has put this feel good idea in people’s heads. But the reality is Google doesn’t care about the users, only advertisers. Google is a cancer. We need to break that company up and regulate AI. Also, we need data privacy and data protection laws. Right now Google can delete you account and all data you have stored with them overnight with no warning and can prevent you from downloading your own data, which for some people could be decades of memories and lock you out of contact with others.
Also, ban AI from also falsely accusing people of having CSAM. Such as what Google and Meta do when it comes to innocent family photos.

Starting a new email with Tutamail or Protonmail and slowly making new accounts with those emails is not difficult. Not sure about Tutamail, but Protonmail allows for easy migration from Gmail.
Yea, this is exactly that reason why the people who do focus and spend time specializing in area of fast processing technology should also take care to make sure to cause a little harm to people as possible. Or there should be more oversight if those people are incapable of doing so themselves. For example, Google causes harm by invading privacy, which is unfortunately more profitable than enabling end-to-end encryption. I don’t know what could solve the problem, but there are surely options out there.
Nothing. If it’s Google operated it’s probably full of issues. They are in the process of merging Gemini into their search engine, probably because not enough people are using it and they need to force it on people. Likewise for other chat bots from other companies.
That was just one example. There are many more. Like Minstral’s Le Chat or Proton’s Lumo. It’s not about how it responds per se, more about it being more private than Gemini.
Highly recommend people leave Google services. Use Ente to store photos. Proton for email. DuckDuckGo or Ecosia for search. Organic Maps for directions. FreeTube or yewtu.be for videos. Venice AI as your advanced chatbot. Google needs to be broken up and regulated.

I’m mainly thinking about how bad it is that AI is scanning people’s private photos like Google and Meta in the name of looking for child abuse. It’s an easy sell if you say anything is done to “save kids”, but it’s just mass surveillance and creating more harm than good.
If you’re comfortable using a NAS, that is probably the best option, but Proton offers drive storage services that are end-to-end encrypted. For photos Ente Photos is a good option.
Google’s algorithms go through all the files you upload to their servers and check them for anything that might go against their terms of service. I mean you could encrypt yourself prior to uploading, but that’s a lot of work. If their algorithm labels even one file as violating their terms of service, they may lock you out of all your data and your account. Their appeal process is useless and is likely just checked by the same algorithm that closed the account in the first place or rubber stamped by a person who goes through thousands of reports a day. Most appeals are rejected and they just delete lifetimes of data/memories like it’s nothing. Of course backups are recommended. Their AI algorithms were rolled out too soon and should never be used as judge, jury, and executioner for people’s data.

In case you are looking for Google alternatives to other services, I highly recommend Organic Street Maps or Magic Earth or Kagi Maps instead of Google Maps. Also FreeTube or Yewtu.be instead of YouTube. And mail providers like Proton or Tuta Mail that are end-to-end encrypted. And VPNs like Proton or Mullvlad. And most of all search engines like DuckDuckGo or Ecosia or Kagi or Tor to onionize your search experience. There are many alternatives to Google. I try to recommend for people to move away from Google where they can. I realize Google has worked their way into many websites and can be hard to get around in that sense, but ad blockers and DNS resolvers like uBlock Origin and NextDNS help to prevent tracking from Google.
Me too. Even after a tragedy caused by Google’s awful AI. My situation was that I uploaded old family photos in 2022, looking for photos of my best friend who passed away from cancer. A week later Google disabled my decade old account without warning in the middle of the night. No explanation. They just said “harmful content” was found and linked to a page of the most heinous accusations you could imagine. My appeal was rejected within hours. The message changed several months later to say “child abuse”, after an NYT article on the issue. Some of my family has changed their habits, but not really by a lot. Most still use Google services a lot. I am still in therapy because of the damage they caused. Some people blame me for not having a back-up.
