Yeah, all the current events making diesel more expensive suck, and will hurt everyone’s budget regardless if they drive. But we all know we need to use less diesel, right? We’ve just found the worst possible way to reduce the world’s reliance on diesel.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Fluxer delivers updated landing page and 2026 roadmap.English
113·19 days agoIt feels corporate and the essential features like self hosting and federation are roadmapped, which is just a promise. I really get that there’s serious issues with Matrix, but in the “leaving discord” wars it doesn’t feel fair for them to carry baggage of years of real world concerns and issues, only for a project like this to present a clean slate as superior rather than untested.

Technology@lemmy.ml•So what I'm reading is that they're either making a gentleman's agreement to let Chinese labs run circles around them or the easy gains are over and they're now running into a wallEnglish
161·22 days agoI think it’s a combo of this and the fact that “intelligence” continues to not scale with the inputs as they’d hoped. I haven’t been keeping up with developments, but it feels like they’re finding new ways to discover that the brain is in fact an miraculously efficient and effective mechanism. Most their party tricks seem to be reproducing brains more minor processing feats in interesting ways. All the promised advancements have stagnated and what remains is just exploitation of economies of scale and its consequences, which is far from the revolution investors were promised.

70·1 month agoMinor asterisk: we need to move away from abusive tech business practices altogether. It’s distressing how people can see the problem and recreate it like with Bluesky. I hope we can build better systems now rather than doing this all over again with european monopolists in 10 years.

Not to get too serious for a shitpost sub, but has anyone seen a solid analysis of microplastics anywhere? I’m talking review of recent science, discussion on types of plastics and sources indicated by research?

News@lemmy.world•Trump signs executive order to change Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ | CNN PoliticsEnglish
1·1 month agoNot completely unchanged. Someone briefly changed the name before other editors restored it and moved Lake America to the official_name:en-US tag. That’s been OSM’s way of not quite placating people insisting on the name change.
Do they both flee the scene only to run headfirst into each other behind someone’s barn?

0·2 months agoReally an idiotic comparison. If I start an account with a hundred and regularly bet low stakes, moving ny account up and down without any crazy losses, are they gonna say I placed thousands in bets when my account was always near $100?

I need a good way to respond when people imply that technology is all techbros. This meme might be it.
