The number AIPAC pays him actually doesn’t mean much because Schumer is so central to their operations that they would pay him literally whatever be needed to stay in power. 1.7M is just what it cost to keep him in power. They would gladly give him 20M if that’s what it took.

It’s an interesting dynamic. AIPAC provides a clear path for politicians willing to toe the line of absolute, unthinking support of Israel in all things. But AIPAC only works towards Israel’s strategic depth if that support is truly absolute. They still have so much strategic depth that AIPAC occupies itself by denying even the conversation about how much support Israel should get through actions this one - there is no conversation, they must get whatever they ask for and anyone who disagrees is an anti Semite.

The problem with this all-or-nothing approach is that it lets them get completely out flanked - they can’t control someone who never wanted AIPAC support in the first place.

For clarification, dairy in the US is heavily subsidized and as a result the US dairy industry over supplies massively. The industry wants to 1)retain these subsidies and 2) gain export markets to drive up demand so they can raise prices (including in the US). As stupid as that is domestically, for other no country’s domestic dairy industry can possibly compete without equivalent subsidies or some kind of protection.

So framing this as wanting to compete in the “free market” is complete nonsense since the US is purposely distorting the shit out of the dairy market by propping up their supply side.

The comment is a response to the title - that China’s exports are “overbearing” as if China is inflicting trade on others unilaterally. The point is that whatever extent to which the US is a victim in this, it was a victim entirely by choice, and a great many people in the US for richer for it. They could have decided not to bypass the local labour market by using China for manufacturing, but there was profit to be made. China just got good at it and used it to their advantage.
