  • This is why I belive listening to what someone tells you they believe is not a waste of time, because you can then convince them otherwise.

Ok but like… How many people will actually change their mind?

I’ve resorted to understanding their psychology. Like what assumptions are they not communicating when they share opinions? What life events pushed them to have a fearful/optimistic outlook? And then I tell them “it makes sense why you would feel this way” which sorta invites them to reconsider without being like “hey why do you think dumb things?”

  • Nobody inherently believes anything. They observe the world as they grow up, they listen to the things their parents and friends say, they listen to music and the media. We all are influenced by the environment around us and then we have the balls to say “I’m an independent thinker”.

I think listening to whatever someone tells you they believe is a waste of time. They don’t hold fast to principles. It’s some combination of regurgitating the environment back and reinforcing pleasurable experiences and removing painful experiences.

  • Hi I’m an American doctor here. I’m going to parrot something my father told me growing up. (I come from a family of doctors). “They will always need doctors”.

I resisted it because I took it for granted but he was right. Being a doctor is among the most stable lifestyles you can find today. I live like I think everyone should be able to live. I can tell my job when I’m not available. People take my opinion seriously(even in non medical matters).

The road to being a doctor is hard as balls and will take a minimum of 7 years (often more) before you can do anything with it but you get to help people, you get to think critically every day, and the life is stable. Tbh I can’t imagine myself doing anything else now. (If you had asked me during training how I felt, I would have told you this was the biggest mistake of my life).

The road to the end is very very long and it is very very stressful. I felt like I was going to die during it several times.

  • My brother had to call CPS just this Friday on his neighbor because he thought it’s okay to beat her 17yo daughter in the street for forgetting to wear a hijab.

I do want to point out that this behavior isn’t exclusive to Muslim culture. Just recently there was a MAGA guy who murdered his daughter for arguing about Trump.

I’m not going to say that there aren’t dangerous men out there, but a government shouldn’t be getting involved in what is a complicated personal nuanced issue. Punishing women for making a choice isn’t the answer.

  • First of all, it oppresses women in their freedom of expression.

Do you think it’s possible that some women actually choose to wear the Hijab? I’m Muslim and most women in my family don’t wear Hijab, but the ones that do really strongly believe in it. There’s zero men in my family that have asked any of their daughters or wives to wear Hijab.

This also leads to a subordination of women below men.

Tell me you’ve never hung out with Hijabis in the West without telling me you’ve never hung out with Hijabis.

It seems like you’re a Western Chauvinist who hasn’t really done any of the work to understand the nuances of the Hijab from a woman’s perspective. Not all women are forced into wearing the Hijab. By forcing young women to not wear it, you’re limiting their self expression. I don’t understand why the government should be involved in this decision which is very personal.

  • Expanding healthcare to another 50-60 million makes a hell of a lot of difference to those people. I would say that is better “in a way that matters”.

But letting corporations raise the price of insulin hurts in a way that matters, especially to people who already had insurance. (I’m an American doctor btw) I can’t tell you how many of my patients had to ration insulin despite having insurance. Sure 50-60 million sounds great but you’re giving them access to a system that will still bleed them dry. Plenty of patients with insurance still have to pay hundreds of dollars for blood thinners. An emergency room visit is still hundreds of dollars. I have great insurance and I just had routine blood work done and the bill was still close to $300. They just created another problem that gave people access while making things more expensive for everyone.

That we know of. Trump stopped reporting the numbers, so I wouldn’t bet on that record holding.

The “we don’t know whose killed the most brown people” argument doesn’t really help the argument that “the Democrats are drastically different than the Republicans”
