Well that and also a lot of us North American ones can trace our culture back to the Unions of old and to a more abstract extent a Scottish striker group who were also called Rednecks, so we have that to take pride in really it’s mostly the boomers and Gen X who tarnished our name silent, greatest, and lost were proper feral and militant against the corporations at times. But yeah Redneckism is basically the inevitable end result of people being too smart, unwise, and not having enough money to do a job proper proper.

Heres the thing I don’t think there ever has been a unified American culture, as soon as assholes started to step off this boats there was already inevitable cultural divergences happening, for example the Massachusetts Puritans who were theocratically driven, the Marylanders who were driven by proto-secular ideals, and Valirginians who were economically driven. While the Mid-Atlandit and New England cultures did reconverge over the last century of so, Coastal Southern especially the rural variants is still noticeably divergent from the rest of the east coast.
Also I’m just gonna note that everything you listed is caused by top down economic pressures that are arguably on the verge of collapse. One of the things you have to factor into your analysis of American cultures is that all of them are subject to federal level pressures meaning that even the most communal cultures for example still have to participate in capitalism due to say taxes since that’s basically the only way to earn cash. I suspect once the feds collapse you’ll see a springtime of nations and the possible death of the Pan American amalgam culture, at least within the first 20 years or so.
While language influences culture and culture influences language they are not the same by any means. Plus within the last hundred years the US has become increasingly mono-lingual in favor of English, according to my great great aunt for example when she was a little girl her father would still speak to himself in a German dialect because German was his first language since he was from a German town. A lot of these minority languages have either naturally due to trade or whatnot or via force from the feds been on the decline or are now extinct some of which predated the founding of the US. A similar thing happened with a lot of regional dialects.
Also define so called high culture? Because frankly given how much of Europe once shared a Greco-Roman high culture irrespective of their own regional cultures I’m gonna call that a potential irrelevancy.
While that may be true it’s very much in the same way that Roman culture is the basis and founding of Modern Romantic cultures. It’s to degrees and the more derived and hybridized the individual cultures are the more distant they become, not even accounting for cultural drift by time alone.
But I will also note that I don’t think the US has a united culture and what is often seen as a Pan American culture is moreso a side effect of the post World Wars migration, the migrations of the great depression/dust bowl, and the yuppies migrating about creating a rough amalgam culture that often out populates the older more divergent regional cultures. Basically if you think of a cultureless suburbanite that’s the thing I’m talking about. Also I think mass media reinforced the whole thing.
Which Americans are we talking? Because a Yooper, Scots-Irish Appalachian, Cajun Louisianan, and some poor bastard from Baker California have little in common. Hell I’m a Southern Californian Redneck and frankly if I have to interact with my Northern Californian ilk I’m stabbing someone and dumping their corpse in an open mine shaft.

3·2 days agoPretty sure degloving someone’s limbs and forcing them to eat their own flesh is still a crime against humanity or at least it should be once done at scale. Same thing with me wanting to roll them in salt afterwards because my sadism merged with my righteous fury and I cannot seperate them anymore.

2·2 days agoCan you get ones with sim card input for games? I’ve been considering getting a hacked PSP to emulate Gamevoy advanced games and to have pre downloaded PSP games and movies. If I can get something more modern with a bit more customizable features that be great, I do have a steam deck it’s just a bit too unwieldy to shove in my pocket like a GBA or PSP.

2·2 days agoUnironically neat, and if it works with old add ons and whatnot it seems like a good way of doing that. Personally I lament that some old tech can’t be acquired anymore since even limited production has ceased to exist and if this is a way of doing that without lack of demand issues fine by me.

3·2 days agoAs someone descended from Norman men who took part in the Harrying of the North can I do as my ancestors did and slaughter Saxon and Angle nobles once more. Sure you’ll get crimes against humanity that only a Californian would think are acceptable, but it’d solve the aristocracy issue well enough.

2·2 days agoWell also it’s an 80 year old tank, it doesn’t matter how well maintained and built it is anything that old is going to have issues or the potential for issues. Better safe than sorry and all that. Also a cannon is notably more violent than say an engine and steel can and will act weird with age.

politics @lemmy.world•JD Vance says Republicans got tired of being ‘called racist’ for noticing America ‘becoming dirtier’
4·3 days agoMaybe it’s because I’m from a weird Californian region but I fell like Indians are generally pumped into the “dirty Asians” category regardless of caste or skin tone. But also I’ve seen really racist assholes defend the local Sikhs in particular so maybe my region is just weird.
I will say that with a handful of exceptions the PS3 generally looks worse than the 360, for example Infamous and MGS4 still hold up well enough but Red Dead Redemption does look a good bit rougher on the PS3.

2·4 days agoOooh, ain’t seen that angle before.
It’s a bit like more traditional Anglo and Celtic American foods in that respect, lots of simple shit that tastes good by itself but is generally considered basic or has had certain context stripped with time. A good example is meatloaf which in some reasons was basically whatever meat and possibly eggs you had lying around after a bit thrown together in an loaf. But then you get shit like cheese curds and it’s just deep fried cheese and it’s great.
Also you can end up with something like my ancestoral food traditions where it’s just soup, cooked meats, and weird increasingly modified trail foods. The trail foods also happen to still be cheap even with modifications, though I guess rice and chili ain’t exactly that complex.

How the fuck is Japan able to make shit so horny and wholesome simultaneously?!
