That time Butters gets “dumped” by his “girlfriend”, the waitress at Raisins who was just using him for tips and he’s out crying on the curb while its raining.

Stan and his goth crew invite him to join them and he declines, his reasoning being

  • Yes, he’s sad and it hurts right now
  • it makes him indirectly happy that something could make him feel that sad (it means he’s alive, human, has a range of feelings that are inherent to the human condition)
  • the only thing that ultimately could male him that sad had to have made him feel really happy and good before that
  • he can’t take the good he felt when he “had” that and seperate that from the sad he felt when it went away.
  • that experience of sadness is beautiful and life-affirming rather than making him numb to everything like Stan was moonlighting inauthentically with his new Goth kids crew
