Those hoses can’t be bent because of the water flow.
Are those laminated side windows?
Oof.
I guess in a situation where you need to break your side window to get out, you’re just fucked then, huh?
They’re pretty common in high end cars and even well equipped midrange cars, AFAIK not that hard to break if you know what you’re doing
As passengers usually do?
This is why we have one of those reusable spring-loaded belt cutter / window breakers in the centre console.
is the car even illegally parked? no painted curb or signs in sight, and the car doesn’t seem to be overlapping with the hydrant at all.
Painted curbs don’t last where it snows. Plows fuck em right up, so why waste the money.
They just get repainted after a few years. No biggie.
Anything within a certain distance of a fire hydrant is a no parking zone. I’m not sure if this differs at all in distance by jurisdiction (since every state has separate licensing). There are sometimes also signs on poles that explicitly say this.
Anything within 15ft is illegally parked
That’ll depend on where you live. Without painted curbs I’d rely on the physical indicators. In this case the bollards in front of it. Car is outside the shown limits so I’m guessing this is legally parked and they just wanted a video.
The bollards aren’t marking anything theyre protecting the hydrant from cars
Absolutely 100% not legally parked. Whether curbs are marked or not, you can’t park that close to a hydrant. 15ft is usually the standard minimum across the US.
usually
Well there’s your problem, your country doesn’t standardise shit well enough.
And there should still be indicators even if the rule is 15 feet. Someone from another state or country might not know, but a yellow line is a very clear indication.
Seems like painting the curb would be an obvious move from a city planning perspective.
Figures he’s a career engine man through and through. Doesn’t know how to take care windows for shit 🤣
Has no one seen Backdraft?
It kind of looks like they bent the hose more to bring it through the window…
Yeah, some fire departments are known for doing this. It’s not about a shorter route for the hose, it’s about sending a message.
I wonder why the video cut off just before they turned it on…
Probably because this made the hose kink and they had to disconnect it all and run it over the car instead while the people inside the building suffocated to death.
Yeah, definitely seems like that took more effort than the problem.
They should have done the right thing and gone around to get it set up asap… The beat the shit out of his car.
Agreed. They didn’t have to do that but I’m glad they did.
Yeah, it definitely would’ve been a more direct route draped across the hood.
No warning lights on the car parked in an illegal spot? What an amateur
I hope the firefighter enjoyed doing that as much I enjoyed watching it
He wasted about two minutes in an emergency to do this. The guy illegally parked there, let the law enforcement handle it and do your job. He could have hooked it up and went literally any direction he wanted to without potentially damaging the hose on broken glass and wasting time doing so.
Of course they can be bent. Also how fucking slow are they working. We measure this in seconds, not minutes. The tank in the engine is limited and ideally you try to run multiple hoses at once. And sneakers and shorts? Firefighters in the US are weird.
Could be a volunteer brigade. I’ve never seen anything like this, firefighters here are kitted the fuck out
That is the FDNY, he isn’t a volunteer.
He is probably the driver or engineer and isn’t going to to into the building
They have the NYC FD emblem on the car, which is s full-service FD
They should get their overwidth truck privileges revoked, it kills good urbanism when they can’t reach a one-way or bike-only street. Bike paths are actually a common way for emergency services in non-American cities to bypass traffic jams, a well-known problem in NYC
Just like everything else in America. Performative, over the top and slow.
That hose would have been straighter going over the car.
Wouldn’t the glass cut up the hose, too?
Car glass is tempered, so probably not
What you see there is not tempered glass. That is laminated glass. This is clearly evident in the video.
He wasn’t the only one doing things and in no way slowed down the whole procedure. There are many steps involved in getting water going and connecting the hose is merely one step. They also don’t need the hose from a hydrant hooked up to spray what’s already in the tank unless they showed up empty.
The amount of water in a tank is a fraction of what is needed to tackle a major fire. You’ve got about 3 minutes worth with a branch open at full flow.
Because of that limitation, you also aren’t going to start an internal attack until you have a reticulated supply established, since running out of water while inside a building is a potential death sentence.
If I were in the same position I would have simply run my feeder run around or over the car rather than messing about like this guy.
Notice how this video is less than three minutes.
Can confirm. We had 2500 liters of water, which lasts for about three minutes on full blast. In case of fire, it’s the first priority, and sometimes the hydrant is quite some distance away.
And can also confirm, the actions in the video are unnecessary.
This guy fights fires.
I think…sounds credible.
I’ve seen a car being towed/dragged out of an alley it was double parked in, so the fire brigade could gain access. They did NOT care how damaged it was in the process.
That seems like a legitimate reason to do so. There seemed to be absolutely no reason to do this in this specific situation though as it didn’t accomplish anything and actually made the angle of the hose much worse than it would have been using literally any other solution.
its a well known thing with people parking in hydrant spots.
This looked like more work than just running the hose over the car. Seems like “everyone here sucks” type of situation.
Seems like time was lost with teaching a lesson…just toss the hose over the car, no? Yes they deserve a fine or something as well but seems excessive in this situation.
They did this in the movie Backdraft. Saw it as a kid in theaters. Ask my step dad about it, and he said damn straight you park in front of hydrate then they swill do this.
nobody mentioned that the car had no alarm,
and could be stolen. They do this all the time just to be dicks… It would’ve been safer and faster to just run it over the car … And this video should prove these specific individuals as liable for the damages.
Lmao, tell us you’re one of the dicks that park wherever you want without telling us
The car isn’t even parked in front of the hydrant and smashing the windows out accomplished absolutely nothing here as you can see the outlet they connected to is pointing toward the hood and bumper of the car and not the windows. You sound like the type of person who calls people “criminals” if they ever criticize the police for misconduct.
More than one person can be an asshole.
If you call me whatever nasty name you can come up with to my face, you’re an asshole. If I then knock you out and give you permanent brain damage, it’s completely fair to call me an asshole too.
Dude, I’m with them. I clicked this for a justice boner, people that park in front of hydrants are selfish pricks, but the whole time I’m thinking “it would have been easier and faster to just go over the hood, or even under the front.” Every second counts and he wasted time breaking the windows and putting the hose through. It even looks like the hose has to bend more this way, I don’t know it that is enough to affect the flow rate, but it can’t help. And in the absence of a red curb (at least I don’t see one) it’s not unreasonable to think the area between the posts is the no parking area, and it looks like they’re outside of it. If they’re in it they’re barely in it. If I had to park that close, I would find another spot, but if I saw someone doing this I wouldn’t think as poorly of them as I would your average selfish parker.
I park legally but that firefighter used the illegal parking as an excuse to deliberately delay aid to an emergency. The firefighter and the driver are both shitheads.
