Do children from wealthy families, millionaire families, billionaire families, old-money families, or whatever exclusively date other people who also come from wealthy families? What if a rich kid’s dad wasn’t rich before they became rich? Like, do you think Tyler Perry’s or Oprah’s kids only date people from wealthy families despite Tyler and Oprah not coming from rich families?
Perhaps you’ve seen billionaires state that everybody with less wealth is usually clawing-for-benefits, but only among their own kind can they truly have friends.
that is, once one takes the principle & re-locates it properly, to any specific & significant kind of privilege 1 of the defining features of class-systems & caste-systems.

I saw a documentary about the ultra rich teenagers in the US years ago. One young girl in that film explained that maintaining friendships with “regular” people was impossible. Her reasoning was that rich people do rich people shit. And you have the choice to pay someones way, which makes for awkward obligation/ resentment. Or you could exclude them, which also causes hard feelings.
That teenage girl? Ivanka Trump.
The most important and often overlooked factor if someone will date you or not is proximity.
If you never meet them you will never date them.
So until the turn of this century the ultra rich stayed with the rich because that is the social circles they operated in.
Now with social media, that is shifting.
I think they just date from the circles they hang out in. I don’t think rich people hang out with poor people in general, I guess they don’t have much in common given that they have different problems. Rich people go to rich people schools, rich people gyms, etc.
My mother (rich family) met my dad (student, father unemployed) while camping in Greece. None of her siblings married rich spouses either.
What about Tyler Perry or any other millionaire or billionaire who didn’t come from rich families? Do they not still hang out with family or childhood friends?
Do you still hangout with your childhood friends? Would you want to marry them years later? Socioeconomic status changes how people treat you, including people you already have existing relationships with. It can also affect how you treat other people if you’re not a very good person. And unfortunately a lot of not-very-good people are rich and/or famous because it requires the willingness to exploit others for personal gain.
Imagine you’re a famous person. Many people who are less famous than you now want to be you. Many other people now dislike you just because you’re famous (or maybe because some bad thing you did got covered in the media which any regular person would get away with). How do you find people who aren’t in one of those two categories to not only befriend, but date? The easiest way is to find someone in similar circumstances as you: a similar level of famous and/or rich. Sure, there are other ways, but they’re harder.
It depends on whether you mean old money wealthy or other. I don’t think it’s so much about the wealth as the entitlement that sets these people apart. Trying to date/marry in as an outsider can be difficult at best, if not just from the culture shock.
I’m not sure how much this applies to inherited wealth, but from an evolutionary psychology perspective, women on average tend to date men who are on their financial level or above - whereas for men, it’s basically the opposite, or it just doesn’t matter. It’s kind of a sad situation, really. If you’re a well-off career woman in your 30s you’re competing for the same men as a 23-year-old Starbucks barista.
