Linux@lemmy.world•Learning fixes without looking everything up or having the answer given outrightEnglish
0·22 hours agoFor new Linux users it’s best to stick with well established and supported distributions. Then it’s easier to find solutions for common problems.
It’s good practice to look up what the commands do, you enter when you find a solution. Read the man page or other documentation of the command you’re entering. It doesn’t need to be everything, just enough to get an idea what it does.
Also: take notes when you find a problem and how you fixed it. You can go back to them later.
sound and screen dimming
You can’t give a general answer to this. There are several different software stacks for sound on Linux. A typical one goes like this, but can look different.
Kernel - driver - ALSA - PipeWire - desktop environment - application - user
There might be an error at each of these levels.
In the simplest case, it’s a bad configuration, where the volume is set to 0 or mute somewhere in this stack. So try different applications first to play sound, also try playing sound from the terminal. Change volume sliders in different places.
Then go down the stack. Try playing sound with ALSA directly using
aplayandspeaker-test.Finally go down to the driver and see if the hardware is detected. Depending if the soundcard is connected via USB or PCI use
lsusborlspci.Find out the type snd chipset of your soundcard and then search if there’s a driver for Linux already. If you have new or unpopular hardware, it can take a while (a year or two) for a driver to be written, tested, and accepted into the kernel. Then it has to go downstream to the distributions until you get it. So for new hardware you might have to do some additional steps like finding a driver and compiling a kernel yourself.
It’s also worth checking the log files of the audio stack (ALSA, pipewire, or whatever your distro uses).
screen dimming
The stack looks like this:
Kernel - driver - X11/XOrg or Wayland - compositor - Desktop Environment (KDE, Gnome, etc.)
The error might be the keystroke not registering, the desktop not sending the right command, the display driver not supporting dimming, a bad or missing configuration. Again work through the stack. Find out what your distro uses.
Try setting the brightness through the terminal for example.

News@lemmy.world•Bragg wants to ban 3D-printed guns in New York and across the USEnglish
12·23 hours agoThe US is awash with guns. 3D printing a gun is more expensive and time consuming than just buying one illegally.
A 3D printer can mainly make things like frames. The one part that’s actually hard to make is the barrel. That one isn’t made in a 3D printer.
Lots of 3D printers have open source firmware. There are several designs you can build yourself from easily available parts. So it would be easy to patch out the detection.
Even if this was implemented, it would have negligible impact on gun related crime in the USA. It also would make 3D printing guns only marginally more difficult.
This is just attention seeking populism and might even get enough attention so lawmakers will try and implement it.
Watch this fear mongering video by wired on it and read the comments.

That guy might be an asshole, but the situation is a little more complex.
In 1948 tens of thousands of Jews were expelled from east Jerusalem, where they had lived for generations. Jerusalem had been majority Jewish for decades at that point. The empty houses were then given to Arabs by the kingdom of Jordan.
When Israel took all of Jerusalem, the people who had lost their homes in 1948 tried to get them back. However they were occupied by Palestinian Arabs then. Decades of lawsuits followed. Some gave up their claims, some came to an arrangement like paying rent.
Taking a house back that was stolen by the current inhabitants, isn’t exactly stealing.
Yaakov Fauci has a title deed to the property. He also has a court ruling. The only thing he does is live in part of a house and be a bit of nuisance. He doesn’t use violence.
Trump has none of these and is far more powerful and dangerous.
This is a comparison that smells of antisemitism.

1·6 days ago2019. Venezuela already had a decade of severe decline before that. Things got bad way before sanctions.

Economic conditions continued to deteriorate in 2016 when consumer prices rose 800% and the gross domestic product contracted by 18.6%,[39] causing hunger to escalate to the point that the “Venezuela’s Living Conditions Survey” (ENCOVI) found nearly 75 percent of the population had lost an average of at least 19 pounds in 2016 due to a lack of proper nutrition.[40] Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States(OAS) stated, “I have never seen a country going down so fast, at every level: politically, economically, socially”.
On 1 May 2017 following a month of protests that resulted in at least 29 dead, Maduro called for a Constituent Assembly that would draft a new constitution that would replace the 1999 Venezuela Constitution.[42] He invoked Article 347, and stated that his call for a new constitution was necessary to counter the actions of the opposition. The members of the Constituent Assembly were not to be elected in open elections, but selected from social organizations loyal to Maduro.[42] It would also allow him to stay in power during the interregnum and skip the 2018 presidential elections, as the process would take at least two years
