Then what is the setup if my computer only has 4GB of memory for daily driving? Just curious because swap partitions are what I normally do on limited resource machines.

Edit: instead of outright promoting the GNU Hurd, I will give my reasons.
The architecture of the Hurd is very scalable compared to other kernels. It does not need much rewriting to adapt to modern technology. Rewriting the Hurd in rust is much easier than other kernels.
It is a GNU project so if it does succeed, we can spread the Free software philosophy to others. It also means that corpo’s cannot influence it.
It is GPLv2 or later, so that is nice to have.
It holds all the benefits of a microkernel.
There is probably more, but they are not as important to me personally.
Is it considered strong copyleft if it is similar to the GPL then?
Never use tor with a VPN because it can make you easier to identify on the tor network.

Also, it is only fine to use a VPN with tor if you know what you are doing.


Is it me, or is it kinda of odd that nixOS did not go full on nix with the init system? For example, setting up service with nix. Obviously systemd is fine for for me (please do not flame me systemd haters), but I wonder if the nix team thought of this idea.

Just want to let you know from my canoebooted laptop that I run a 100% “free as in freedom” OS (trisquel GNU/Linux). Also you have convinced me about striving for a goal instead of doing it perfectly, which is not possible. Well said.


NetBSD is more portable than Linux and supports a lot of CPU architectures. OpenBSD is secure by default. I think the BSD’S have jails, which are better containers, but I do not know much about it.
For desktop daily use, it only matters if you really want that Unix taste.


Is there another GPL OS instead? I am a fan of the GNU Hurd, but sadly I cannot run it on my hardware. The team of devs is really small, and it is amazing what they have done in all these years.


NetBSD already runs a lot of the satellites out there.


I have also heard of solaris, but never had a clue what it was.
I am pretty sure that is the enterprise OS owned by Oracle. It is closed source.
All I want is an os I can trust, that is logical, works, and stays out of my way.
NetBSD or openBSD is your best bet. You will have to install the desktop environment yourself though, unless you like their cwm. FreeBSD is the most popular BSD, but they are using AI to find security vulnerabilities.


Time to look around again I guess, I’ve never looked into BSD, Hurd, Solaris…
The GNU Hurd is probably not going to be for you unless you have Ethernet and an old thinkpad or dell laptop. In the mailing list, I know the main devs are usually against ai contributions, although I am unaware if they have a policy.
I would recommend using netBSD because the devs have a clear stance on no rust and no llm usage. There is also openBSD which has the best code quality of the three BSD’s, and I think had 2 vulnerabilities in a decade.
