Thought I had gotten a bad batch of batteries because no matter what I did, I couldn’t get an AirTag back online after a replacement.
Turns out, the bitter coating seems to be preventing proper contact in the AirTag. Cleaning the battery off with an alcohol swab solved the problem immediately for me and my AirTag came right back online.
You can also lick off the bitter coating if you’re into that kind of thing
It is the best part of the battery!
More tasty than a Nintendo Switch cartridge!
When something doesn’t work, I always say: “Have you tried licking it?!” 🤷
that’s what she said
“THANK YOU!” 🤣

TIL: Button batteries have a bitter coating.
I work in healthcare, you’d be shocked how common button battery ingestion is in kids. Little dipshits are always trying to kill themselves
Does something like that not just pass right through?
A lot can go wrong, mostly chemical burns or GI obstructions. Since it’s usually little kids that eat them it’s that much easier for it to get lodged somewhere and create problems

Just a joke, chill out
This probably has already prevented the one or other button battery to be swallowed by a toddler.
So do Nintendo Switch game cartridges. They are also small and prone to a toddler making them a snack. You can try this at home, give one a kick lick and you’ll see they aren’t pleasant.
Edit: kicking or licking toddlers not recommended

I’ve heard of that, but either none of my games have this coating, or I’m somehow immune to the taste of it.
Did you buy your copies pre-licked?
Maybe there’s someone at the factory licking the cardtridges before sealing the boxes, and I just happen to be getting the pre-licked ones.
I just licked a cartridge and I regret everything.
I had the same issue and scrubbed the battery, reinstalled, worked fine.
Yes. Had exactly the same! Was thinking that I could not replace a simple battery and contemplated my life choices. But then came to the conclusion it was just the coating :)

How to replace the battery in your AirTag
CR2032 batteries with bitterant coatings might not work with AirTag or other battery-powered products, depending on the alignment of the coating in relation to the battery contacts.
Omg.
I think I have the same issue with my tiles.
I emailed both the tile company and the battery company a d neither responded (other then to say it was the others fault)
