I know that residents of let’s say New Hampshire, Delaware or Oregon for example don’t have to pay sales tax but if they’re importing stuff from other countries: they are stuck on paying tariffs or customs broker fees (making it cost more than the price sold) before the goods even show up on their doorstep. Blame the orange man for rescinding the de minimis threshold (he imposed tariffs on every nation).
Even people who live in states with sales tax: do they actually add state ST on imported goods plus tariffs upon entering the US via mail? If you have imported something recently, since the de minimis threshold is dead: are import duties being imposed the moment you know they’re now in the US (usually CBP notifies you if tariffs have to be paid prior to the package being allowed to pass through).
Because they are different taxes managed by different levels of government and none said governments have to make sense.
