Once the herd settles, they’ll suffer just about anything to avoid having to move.

As the late great Thomas Jefferson once wrote:

all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed

Funny how we keep seeing this same tendency play out in soooo many ways in so many contexts.
