The cat is rubbing its scent glands/scratching its cheek (and shoulder) on the stairs’ edges, to satisfy an itch and mark its property simultaneously. Sliding down the stairs is merely a benign side effect.

Your premise is mistaken. The cat is rubbing its scent glands/scratching its cheek (and shoulder) on the stairs’ edges, to satisfy an itch and mark its property simultaneously. Sliding down the stairs is merely a benign side effect.
