I’ve heard before that a key hallmark of liberalism throughout history is exceptions to its own tenants while continuing to claim the moral high ground.

Seems to fit here quite nicely.

Yes this is how sovereignty is maintained. This duality is why other members of the international community can refuse to follow ICC declarations one year and support the other years.

The United States doesn’t release that control willingly. Others would have to make them if they feel it’s that important.

Until someone can take that authority, they retain it.

Biden denounces ICC for ‘outrageous’ implication of equivalence between Israel and Hamas

The Biden administration on Monday forcefully denounced efforts by the International Criminal Court to seek arrest warrants for top Israeli officials and Hamas leaders, saying the court’s efforts put the terrorist organization and a top US ally on equivalent footing.

In the interest of learning, the ICC is not a state actor, so what exactly is the difference in this case?

EDIT: The sanction is actual travel and economic restrictions on members of the ICC. “Denounce” is the typical posturing. For those who care…

His words mean absolutely nothing. Biden will let the both-sides theater play out when convenient. When the both-sides theater does not favor israel Biden will bypass congress and use slimy loopholes to send israel weapons.

In earlier words Biden has already denounced the ICC and said they were not going to follow the arrest command. Called the ICC outrageous and simped for Netanyahu. Some lip-service to wash his bloody hands with now doesn’t magically make him innocent.

If Biden truly cared about international law he’d be doing everything in his power to prevent these sanctions from becoming reality. But he’s too busy bypassing congress to build his Trump wall against immigrants.

Ha why not. In fact I’ll go further. I just donated 200 dollars to humanitarian aid in gaza. I half thought about making it on the condition of him signing this bill, but then I thought it would be cruel for them to never receive it. It helps more than denying the reality of any differences between parties. After all of we can accept that reality why would they try to go any further?

OK, so replace his photo with any congressperson if you insist on being so pedantic.

The point is the absurdity of american government, which Biden as the president, is a symbol of.

When advantageous, most republicans would also claim that the US respects international law, then turn around and pass a vote like this.

EDIT: about a third of house dems supported the bill

Way to completely miss the point. He’s obviously there cuz he’s the current US president.

If they wanted to dunk on biden specifically of course, they could’ve just pointed out how he’s has been bypassing congress to send weapons to israel faster, or how he walked back the few sanctions on israeli settlers that were only for optics anyway since it was to pretend as if the state itself wasn’t behind it, but this is just the most recent shit the US is doing.

Edit: Looks like Biden does agree with the move against the ICC too, so there’s no need to bring up all the other shit he’s done specifically.

"I have never really understood exactly what a ‘liberal’ is, since I have heard ‘liberals’ express every conceivable opinion on every conceivable subject. As far as I can tell, you have the extreme right, who are fascist racist capitalist dogs like Ronald Reagan, who come right out and let you know where they’re coming from. And on the opposite end, you have the left, who are supposed to be committed to justice, equality, and human rights. And somewhere between those two points is the liberal.

As far as I’m concerned, ‘liberal’ is the most meaningless word in the dictionary. History has shown me that as long as some white middle-class people can live high on the hog, take vacations to Europe, send their children to private schools, and reap the benefits of their white skin privilege, then they are ‘liberal’. But when times get hard and money gets tight, they pull off that liberal mask and you think you’re talking to Adolf Hitler. They feel sorry for the so-called underprivileged just as long as they can maintain their own privileges."

Except Biden put out a statement opposing this legislation:

The Administration strongly opposes H.R. 8282, the “Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act.” H.R. 8282 would impose mandatory sanctions and visa restrictions on any foreign person determined to aid, materially assist, or provide financial support for efforts by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to undertake certain investigations and prosecutions, among others. This legislation could require sanctions against court staff, judges, witnesses, and U.S. allies and partners who provide even limited, targeted support to the court in a range of aspects of its work.

The Administration is deeply concerned about the ICC Prosecutor’s heedless rush to apply for arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials. At the same time, the Administration opposes the imposition of sanctions against the ICC, its personnel, its judges, or those who assist its work. There are more effective ways to defend Israel, preserve U.S. positions on the ICC, and promote international justice and accountability, and the Administration stands ready to work with the Congress on those options.

        Source

Just because he said something else critical of the ICC doesn’t mean he supports the house sanctions.

Is that a sourced quote from Biden or the administration, or are you just making up a quote to get mad at?

There’s plenty of room to criticize Biden for his actual actions in the Israel-Palestine conflict. No need to make shit up.

In fact, the only reason I could think to do so would be if you were his political opponent. Like, hypothetically speaking, if I were a conservative on the Internet trying to undermine Biden’s support and also draw attention away from the fact that it’s Republicans in the House doing this, I might (hypothetically) post this article with a purposefully vague headline and a picture of Biden on the Internet. Seems doing something like that would serve GOP goals rather nicely, wouldn’t it?

Come on, you can’t just expect .world users to actually read or think critically like that

The folks who can tell the difference between “denounce” and “sanction” are the ones who can’t think critically?

            Good one.

I’m not defending anyone just pointing out the disengenuous spin that is purposely being made by misrepresenting the republicans led house. And yes that is on brand for ml. I despise Bidens support for Israel very much but the level of shit like picturing those in totally different government branch coming out of ml is very noticeable and blatant. [email protected] has the same news but the picture is of the leader of the house. That is actually an accurate representation of the event.

No offense, but it’s hard to take anything said seriously when a very vocal group of you are preemptively jumping to a derogatory term.

“It’s clear Israel wants to do all it can to ensure civilian protection,” Biden said. “Let me be clear: What’s happening is not genocide.”

“Let me be clear,” the president said in the statement, “whatever this prosecutor might imply, there is no equivalence – none – between Israel and Hamas.”

Hey i can agree with this statement.

In capitalist society, providing it develops under the most favorable conditions, we have a more or less complete democracy in the democratic republic. But this democracy is always hemmed in by the narrow limits set by capitalist exploitation and consequently always remains, in effect, a democracy for the minority, only for the propertied classes, only for the rich. Freedom in capitalist society always remains about the same as it was in the ancient Greek republics: freedom for the slave owners.

The picture shows Biden but the text says House which is controlled by Republicans.

Very disingenuous. Not even the same branch of the government.

Don’t worry, he completely agrees with the move as you’d expect.

And why would it matter if it’s a rep or dem doing something specifically? They’re the two parties of capital and instruments of the capitalist class; one cannot exist without the other. It doesn’t matter which one specifically has been doing the most recent fascist shit.

One was trying to pass a law to sanction ICC the other said it was outrageous to equate Israel with Hamas.

Yes in fact the US tried to thwart the creation of the ICC as much as they possibly could. The Israel question has been the biggest reason all along. But also they didn’t want Bush being prosecuted for invading Iraq.
