At least Windows appears user friendly. Arch otoh is quite hard to set up the first time.

I’m not familiar with Google Matter, but you may find google alternatives for home assistant integrations at [email protected]
I’ve been pleasantly surprised before.
I have 2. One has broken twice from over use, so I reprinted the broken piece and swapped it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever met an actual dumb person?English
36·11 days agoI spent 20 minutes (I timed it) on the phone diagnosing a tech support issue and instructing the user on how to fix it. It took about 10 seconds for me to realise that number lock was turned off.
The rest of the 20 minutes was trying to get the user to find and press “Num lock” on the keyboard.
About 10 minutes in, they actually found and pressed it. Apon noticing that nothing had appeared on the screen, they tried pressing it again, then announced it didn’t work.
Somehow, just getting them to press the button one more time was not simple, as they now had to begin their logical left-to-right scan of the keyboard again to find this mysterious new “Num lock” button they’d never heard of before.
This person (on another call) would say the name of each key as they pressed it. They would say “Caps lock, A, Caps lock, Enter” when typing a single “A” on a line, but didn’t know what “Caps lock” was and couldn’t find it on the keyboard when asked to press it immediately after having said and pressed it.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•So, has age verification really become the new normal?English
0·18 days agoAre you suggesting that all countries on earth will adopt this law, or that all developers in all countries will comply with the law of one country?
Will all previous versions of all OSs be deleted? Will all OSs become closed source so you can’t just remove the age verification part?
Will you be the only person on earth who is willing to break an unethical law to have basic privacy?
If yes to all the above, then you may need to start learning how to program.

0·19 days agoTake back control of your OS. Use a different OS if you need to.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•Absurdly Fast EV Chargers Are Coming To America, But Cars Aren't ReadyEnglish
0·24 days agoWe should have stuck with MJ and MJ/s. No need to get W or h involved.
Stand it up on one end?
Magnifying glass + lots of typing ones and zeros.
It depends on where you live, but in most places, even the most expensive rapid charger is still cheaper than fuel. That’s not even including the lower maintenance costs of EVs.
You do miss out on the convenience of home charging, and that is a pretty big deal for most people. The best part about an EV is waking up to a full charge every day and never having to stop to fill up.
If you have enough money for the upfront cost, electric cars are cheaper over their lifetime.
Not starting a war is both cheaper upfront and ongoing.
Gambling destroys lives. Making gambling illegal may be controversial, but I can’t see any reason to allow gambling ads.
If you want to gamble, then it’s your own life to ruin. If you advertise gambling, then you are ruining other people’s lives.
Ban gambling ads.
A lion and prejudice.

Technology@lemmy.world•When Escalator Breaks, It Turns StairsEnglish
2·28 days agoMultiple independent braking systems and adequate maintenance.
A single failure may cause the escalator to stop working, but it takes 3 failures in a row to make it catastrophic. Regular maintenance catches this failures before 3 in a row can occur.

Technology@lemmy.world•When Escalator Breaks, It Turns StairsEnglish
5·28 days agoIf any of the stairs are damaged and cannot stay attached correctly, there is a chance of falling into the machinery below, which will not stop just because a human is in the way.
If the failure is in the braking system, it can quickly turn into rapidly moving stairs, which can be very lethal.
Most escalators have multiple independent braking systems so that this doesn’t happen, but some poorly maintained escalators have been discovered with 2 or even all 3 systems disabled.

It might help.
