Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Anon died on the "clang format bad" hill
6·10 days agoThe default clang-format configuration is absolutely horrendous, but for our company we had an in house clang-format configuration that actually made the code look quite good. The problem is you still have to control code spacing/some alignments yourself.

143·10 days agoYeah! Emacs has always been the superior editor!
Sometime, less is more, but not for an encyclopedia, which is, by definition, literally supposed to contain all knowledge. The previous encyclopedias were limited by their volume, as they must be physical, but not Wikipedia. I think Wikipedia wins 100% on this front.

Technology@lemmy.world•The US is ordering every civilian agency to rip out DeepSeek, even tools built on itEnglish
41·15 days agoI would assume the gov agencies self host their instances due to sensitive data. But even if they don’t, why not switch to self host?

18·15 days agoIt’s self hosted tho?? I don’t get it. Isn’t remote-togglable stuff way more dangerous, like I don’t know, the Star Link?

3·20 days agoThis looks ultra vibe coded. Can it really be trusted? It even had an “old formula” where it’s just 1B per day. Seems to me that the site owner just said “alright, replace the old one with a slightly more realistic one”.

Greentext@sh.itjust.works•Anon isn't worried about population decline
2·24 days agoThe biggest problem is the aging population and the need to support them via social security, etc. As the population ages, the distribution becomes an inverted pyramid and we’ll need to pay for more and more people’s retirement. It’ll slowly become worse and worse as one person will eventually be responsible for the survival of 4-5 old people (and their family notwithstanding). Otherwise I think a declining population is fine.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘Pure insanity’: Mathematicians will need years to make sense of OpenAI’s latest dropEnglish
47·25 days agoI think OpenAI has retracted some of them already. For OpenAI it’s a really low-risk thing: if it’s wrong, then just retract the paper. If it’s right though, the fame all goes to OpenAI. Meanwhile, people who spent their whole life researching on this topic, needs to confirm this manually for OpenAI.

0·27 days agoAs much as I advocate for human written code, we should also acknowledge that AI has gotten way more competent recently, esp. on the coding front. I think security and vulnerability scanning, (maybe together with code review?), should be the few valid uses of AI.
