My experience with ethically run (if unethically created) local models has been similar. Lots odd hardware to get slow mediocre answers.
But the biggest reason AI competes with plain old web search is that they’ve enshittified the web search available to us.
Corporate assholes are breaking search to force people to use their centralized harmful AI answer guessers.

But I do have a nice drink set aside for my own enjoyment on the day that I’m convinced Alex will stop harming others.
I don’t have any particularly strict rule about how I get convinced he is done hurting people. I suspect I’ll see it in the obituaries rather than an op-ed. But I’m open to either.

It won’t be a problem, because companies are taking the risks of AI seriously, and compensating employees at every level well enough to ensure each employee takes proper precautions.
