I have my personal website domain and some selfhosted stuff on subdomains on a njalla for over 5 years. Never had any issues cause none of what I do is illegal.

I don’t remember how I set it up a long time ago. But when I look at my server logs I only see myself.

Afaik I just added the biggests lists. But I don’t remember.

The owner sets the level. If they set strict level, all bots are blocked.

They do care. VC funding happens because the result is profitable. If it is less profitable, there will be less funding because of higher investment risk.

They can’t stop bots on any of the other sites they regulate either.

They can and do. What is blocked depends on what the website owner sets as settings in cloudflare.

Bots intentionally change up their behavior and identifying information as to be undetected.

If they have to crawl the web while behaving like a normal human, it will be magnitudes slower and more costly.

1. they can already block VPN traffic (unless you use their VPN)

2. their whole business model is based on them being a man in the middle that decrypts ssl and analyses the packets plainly

3. about a third of the worldwide websites are using cloudflare so they have a pretry good birds eye view on behaviour of any machine, datacenter or ip range that will be visiting a lot of websites, which in turn will trivially whether it is normal user behaviour or a crawler.

lower temps work partially afaik and they will never fully dry the silica gel. You should aim for above 100°C

If you are concerned about safety have one dedicated oven dish for the silica gel and ventilate your oven and kitchen thoroughly after a session.

On the budget side there is:

raspberry pi + usb RAID enclosure that can spin down the harddrive (I used icybox in the past)

Instead of a pi, it is also interesting to look at mini PCs like N97 or N100 which are super cheap nowadays, about the same as a rpi5 if you consider whats included / what addons you’d have to buy for the pi. Mini PC have more RAM, a build in nvme, a way beefier CPU. But their power efficiency is way worse.

That would be collective punishment. Which is very unfair - I agree. But it is not discrimination.
