It should be 260000 km according to Wikipedia, although statistica lists 149000km (still the largest in the world, but significantly less). I wonder if the Wikipedia number is before a bunch of rails were destroyed. Basically that would be our high score, but really the high speed rail should be the goal of which we basically have none.

Statistica also lists the European Union, so not all of Europe, at 220000 km in 1990 (and declining since then, but who isn’t). Dunno where Florida rail got their numbers but I should know better to trust anything coming out of that state.

This needs to be higher. The US has the most rail in the world, at over 224,000 miles 257,000 km according to Wikipedia or 149,000 according to Statistica. Europe, by comparison, has 94,000 miles. the European Union, by comparison, has around 200,000 km recently according to Statistica. That’s one country having more rail than the total of a whole continent. The original numbers came from Florida, which automatically makes them suspicious, but these ones are still pretty impressive.

Yeah, but I don’t think they’ll keep it unless it turns a profit. Meta as a whole will always have ads which literally print money for free, but they’ll Google the VR line as soon as their lizard overlord gets bored of the metaverse idea. Maybe they’ll sell it instead of close it like Google always does, actually… That would be nice.

I don’t see them turning a profit on the market after killing their competitors. I don’t get their angle. Unless they can offer something truly transformative, they’re going to put themselves out of business doing that.

But yeah, they have this all in on VR/AR mentality which I don’t see working out. Killing the competition does guarantee no one else makes a good product either.

I always kind of thought a good desktop system, where wearing the headset is cheaper than getting a new larger monitor or more monitors, but the long term comfort of wearing a headset instead kills that idea pretty strongly right now. Even just a theater experience is kinda meh.

You can now get refurbished for around $200. Mostly the meta quest 2. I’d be happier with something that isn’t meta affiliated, but it’s a solid headset. Considering how expensive most of the rest are, getting it down this far is pretty good. Maybe in a decade, there will be more entry headsets at this price point or lower.

Convenience: meta has hand tracking as controllers and can play games by itself so you only need to put the headset on, and theirs is much lighter than the old vives I cut my VR teeth on. The head strap isn’t great still for convenience, but there are third party straps that are much easier to put on and take off. The framework for convenient VR is there, but support is dwindling as there’s not much money in the VR market compared to the cost vs anything else in games.

I hate that most of this is about meta, but I haven’t seen anyone else really making great strides in VR. There’s a Chinese company I need to find again which apparently made super light headsets I was going to keep an eye on and forgot.

Using sex terms (as in “fucked up” or “that sucks”) to indicate violence (as in preventing normal action or imposing deprivation inducing results, philosophical violence, not colloquial) is a meme as old as time. It’s more of a dysphemistic treadmill thing than anything. People are okay with being oppressed when talked about in normal terms like “walled garden” but talking about sex at all is taboo in a lot of places (for no good reason). (I am asexual (mostly) and I find this paradoxical aspect of the largely sexual public (in the US) to be massively a detriment to society.)

I’ll back this up, and recommend people having a hard time look into Spell Labs on the steam workshop (and elsewhere) to help get further into the game. Once the game really clicks, it’s super satisfying. Even before then, the ridiculous wonder of all the things are great. It’s just as hard as it is amazing and that can be a turn off. There are other quality of life mods available in the workshop for people wanting to just enjoy the game, but the tutorial in Spell Labs is one of the biggest helps I got in unlocking progression.

Noita Together sessions were the big thing that turned the game into an obsession for me.

NFS: Hot Pursuit. HP2 was a perfect game in the arcade racer genre. HP remake doesn’t even have bots in multiplayer, meaning you and your buddies won’t be chased by cops because no one plays that game and the cops have to be played by humans.

Not quite, the Helene one is between 25% and 50% more zoomed in based on what I can see of the bump of Louisiana and the shape of Cuba. Still a striking comparison even with that accounted for.
