Went to the beach the other day. The paid parking lot had a sign saying that a day pass was required, and could be purchased online. The lot’s wifi SSID and password were also printed (No cell service), so you could do it right there on your phone. But the URL to the payment page wasn’t there. Only a QR code.

Is there something wrong with me if I want to be able to just type the address of the payment page into my phone, the same way I typed in the wifi password? Why is obfuscating or hiding important details like this becoming the norm?

Actually, it seems that for most service members joining the military is one of several potential choices, and they simply weighed it as the best one for a handful of top reasons: Opportunity for career advancement, financial stability, having a family member already in the military, student financial support incentives, and moral / patriotic reasons. It’s a popular myth that a large portion service members are there for lack of any practical alternative, in fact very few are. The DoD recruitment budget (Marketing campaign) is over $4 Billion annually last I checked, for the good reason that most recruits have to be convinced.

“Biologically predestined” is garbage but I don’t too often see people making that argument. “Statistically more likely” is what I usually see. More nefarious because it directs real numbers, which can be influenced by many factors, toward the single unstated implication that it’s biologically predestined. And that’s why a full and honest discussion of contextual social factors is necessary when talking about these kinds of fears.
