A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•10+ year manager named Joe was apparently fired for bringing cookies to be thrown away before their sell by date to a food pantry in my town
57·4 months agoYep! Call me a skeptic on these stories. I’ve seen too many, “I was fired because I clocked in 5 minutes late!”
Only for it to come out that while they were fired for “being late”, it was the last straw because of all their HR complaints for sexually harassing dozens of women, offensive humor, and for creating a toxic atmosphere.
A decade ago, I was annoyed by emojis. Hate that shit.
But then some PM decorated all the knowledge base page titles in our Confluence to have a icon in the front to visually group the goal.
And that’s when I learned how valuable a good emoji can be.

The incredible disconnect with the expat community that they are literally immigrants in a foreign country. Don’t visit the expat social groups if you don’t want to be pissed off.
Had a ex-friend who went real hard last year about feeling his masculinity has been challenged. Went deep into the manosphere language. He was extra annoying. Every convo was about how he, a white man in America, was being repressed. He started labelling random shit as masculine/feminine. Got sick this and stopped inviting him.
A few months later, I learned the divorce was finalized and he’s been sending me invites to hang with him in his bachelor pad. Nah dog you suck now.

1·1 year agoFuck dropbox. Dropbox uses your data for AI training.
They had some backlash so now it’s a toggle depending on your account.
Cancelled them immediately because I originally was using Dropbox to store personal information like tax and backup passwords. And now I know they can/will fuck you over for profit.

politics @lemmy.world•Only 35% of Americans trust the US judicial system. This is catastrophic
0·1 year agoI still meet people who trust a police officer to have their best interests in mind.
And like share the pizza? Ew.
I had a brilliant idea for a app during college. It connected self-identified lonely nerds with other self-identified lonely nerds. Like “Oh you like anime, here is this other guy, and here are five events you can attend together.” I was hoping for that Zuckerberg money if this app was a hit.
I ran it through a test trial with a dozen pairings of them in my college campus to see if it had value.
And yeah, a lot of the feedback was that the other person was kind of annoying/intolerable. Which was funny when both of them said that about each other.
Two weeks ago, I saw the loner at the table of an event. Went to go talk to them because they were alone for a while.
In less than 10 minutes, they made a offensive joke that would have insulted half the people here, and complained about their living situation unprompted.
This is unfortunately the world of open-source.
- Nerd tells you to use the open-source thing.
- Non-technical tries it and asks questions
- Nerd proclaims it’s not a real problem/your fault/not applicable/fix it yourself
- Some company takes that open-source version or idea, makes it easier for end users and monetize it
- Nerd gets angry and repeats step 1
Source: I am nerd and I contribute to open-source.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: You don't own your Kindle e-books.
1·2 years agoI haven’t used Kindles personally ever, but I helped my neighbor export their kindle collection a few years ago.
It dumped it into mobi files to use with calibre. Then from there, you can convert them into epubs.
I recall it being straightforward. Probably something a kindle owner should do periodically to back up their collection.

Lock eyes with the chef.
Don’t let them win.
This was highly effective when I used it in real life.
The conspiracy theorist got real mad demanding I name sources, I kept telling him to find it on the internet with fake search terms.

0·2 years agoThis happened to my wife and I recently.
We came for a visit and her usual doctor wasn’t available. This new doctor flat out said, “I didn’t get a chance to read your medical history so tell me what’s going on.” My wife was confused, because this was her third visit to check her hormone levels. it wasn’t a checkup, but a followup.
And this doctor proceeds to not understand any of this, as she keeps asking her questions about why she might be there, instead of spending two minutes reading the medical history.
My wife ends up crying while Im sitting in the corner begging my wife we should just leave because shes not getting anything from this doctor.

A percentage of American have been emboldened with “ain’t my problem”.
It happened when they made COVID-19 political.
