His crowd (cult) is a measure of his self worth. He surrounds himself with people that will shower him with praise, and attacks anyone that doesn’t feed his ego. If he hadn’t started a life of crime so early, he probably would have loved setting up a compound and just living out his days with a cult to control and have them heap praise on him every second of every day.
