No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Would it be offensive for me to wear bonnets as a white person?
0·6 days agoit’s only cultural appropriation if you’re making a shit ton of money off of something you copied from another culture
Or something that is ceremonial and is being used out of context is a common complaint. Tho most traditional clothing also has a party associated with it, so really just make a good judgement.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How no-techy/"common" people know if a Open Source code is secure?English
0·9 days agoIf this had been closed source, the attacker would not have been able to use the technique to commit the changes in the first place.
No need for speculation we have such a real equivalent.
The SolarWinds Cyberattack Explained: Hack, Victims, and Key Facts
Both are supply chain attacks and the proprietary world let it go farther. They both highlight vulnerabilities. There are going to be small and important FOSS projects that have burnt out maintainers, and possibly few eyes on. In principal someone should be getting paid to keep things safe in closed land, but security is a cost center and an easy cut for the MBAs in charge of things.

Technology@lemmy.world•When your vehicle outlives its cloud: What happens next?English
2·14 days agoOhh for sure. That is also my position. I was just pointing out that people do not pick a car for the entertainment, but it can sway a purchase. An auto maker that keeps an open platform might have a stronger third party market that helps sway people into their cars, so even in their “we are trying to maximize our profits” still have a reasoning for it. Of course good luck telling senior management.

Technology@lemmy.world•When your vehicle outlives its cloud: What happens next?English
3·14 days agoYou know it might make sense for automotive. The car is the product after all. The quality of the engine is ultimately what drives sales and most of the entertainment is traditionally third party. Making the on board stuff open helps them make a platform for third parties that are safe from manufacturer trying to push them out or collect fees. That environment also helps the manufacturer in its own sales as their cars are where the cultural impact is.
