  • I don’t know what tools you would use for this on MacOS, but you could use some firewall implementation to block internet access for user and system apps that your are concerned about. If suspect that unwanted connections are being made to specific hosts (IP addresses or URLs) and you know them, you could block access to those specific hosts with a hosts file or, again, with your firewall.

    To summarize the above:

    1. read up on firewalls for MacOS
    2. read up on hosts files/DNS based blocking for MacOS

You could also simply disconnect from the internet while typing, then saving and encrypting the saved file, deleting the plain text file and only then reconnecting to the internet.

Lastly, don’t put effort into pursuing privacy blindly. Formulate your threat model. What do you need to protect? What do you want to protect? From whom? Why? Without this, you’ll burn yourself out.

  • Ask yourself: what do you want to versus need to protect and why? Privacy for the sake of privacy is a waste of time, energy and other material, physical and mental resources. Formulate your threat model by spending some time with a pen and paper, answering the above question.

With that out of the way: I buy vouchers, because there is a physical retailer in my country that sells them and they are thankfully not hardcore affiliated with big tech yet. Previously, I used to pay with credit card, since PII is not saved it their payment tokens and even the tokens get deleted after six months, I believe it was.

If you need anonymity and you need to leave no trace of you having purchased Mullvad, use cash. Don’t forget to put on vinyl gloves. Withdraw a vastly different amount of money from the ATM than the cost of the subscription fee in question. Deposit the envelope at a postal office - or box - not in your neighborhood.

Edit: I just recalled, that I did try paying with cash once. Worked like a charm. Naturally, there was a delay.

  • When I was a Japanese teacher at a university and ALL of the evaluation cards said “we want more of him”, “he really listens to his students” and so on. I was complete.

When I volunteered for a week at a shelter for children in Japan after the 3/11 earthquake and this one kid - perhaps 5 or 6 yrs old - and I became really good friends. Every smile, laughter and every other sign of joy of theirs made me feel like life was worth living.

When my Japanese ex wife told me that she’s grateful for me freeing her of the oppressive and toxic femininity norms that the Japanese countryside had indoctrinated her with since childhood. It felt like there is still hope.

When one of my clients (I’m a parole officer) started crying uncontrollably and told me that they never imagined that they would be met with kindness and compassion from the justice system. That felt like I actually could be the change I want to see in an otherwise increasingly inhumane justice system.

    Also, good question. Thanks.

  • In my case - and this isn’t quite an answer to your question, but - I only have a problem with men. Too many men - not all, but enough of them - don’t mind their bodily hygiene, which I can find repulsive. This is not ideological but experience and prejudice on my side. I have the opposite prejudice - and experience - regarding women.

Which is to say: I love sex but I hate to fear whether my next romp is going to be in a bed of flowers or in the gutter.

PS: how interesting that I have an aversion to “the gutter” but at the same time have some other… edgy? kinks. 🤣
