Privacy@lemmy.ml•How can i write safely on a device without there being a possibility of what i write getting taken out and viewed in other ways other than from that device?English
2·2 hours agoI don’t know what tools you would use for this on MacOS, but you could use some firewall implementation to block internet access for user and system apps that your are concerned about. If suspect that unwanted connections are being made to specific hosts (IP addresses or URLs) and you know them, you could block access to those specific hosts with a hosts file or, again, with your firewall.
To summarize the above:
- read up on firewalls for MacOS
- read up on hosts files/DNS based blocking for MacOS
You could also simply disconnect from the internet while typing, then saving and encrypting the saved file, deleting the plain text file and only then reconnecting to the internet.
Lastly, don’t put effort into pursuing privacy blindly. Formulate your threat model. What do you need to protect? What do you want to protect? From whom? Why? Without this, you’ll burn yourself out.
No idea. Perhaps they felt it should’ve been posted to a community with “politics” in its title? I don’t know.
Well put! In my original post, I tried to draw from Hannah Arendt’s Banality of Evil , in which she discusses how the totalitarian Nazi state at the time came to be out of the inactions of people, among other things. I also tried to further exemplify it with the poem First They Came, and finally I tried to connect the dots with how the same process is ongoing as we speak but in regards to digital privacy.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Share your experience on fighting* for privacy and what obstacles - if any - have recently been put in place by your government to make resistance difficult?English
1·4 hours agoSweet! Whenever you feel ready, please do share! At my workplace, I am kind of known as “the tech guy”, but unfortunately not in a privacy oriented way… Only, “can you please set up my phone? I wanna Tiktok🥹🥹🥹”…

2·4 hours agoFor some reason, every time I even mention the word “privacy” or “online integrity” or the likes, I get the retort “what do you have to hide? 😏😏😏😏😏” Shifting the conversation from “having something to hide” to privacy being a fundamental building block of democracy is what I try to put effort into. But it ain’t easy. 😮💨 I have never said “ain’t” in my LIFE before this. 😂

6·4 hours agoYeah, I only use Windows every now and then in a VM to flash Android devices, because I can’t figure out how to use the CLI version of Odin on Linux. 😫 Even then, I use Tiny10 and debloat it with The Ultimate Windows Utility.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Id mullavad vpn cash worth it?English
10·12 hours agoAsk yourself: what do you want to versus need to protect and why? Privacy for the sake of privacy is a waste of time, energy and other material, physical and mental resources. Formulate your threat model by spending some time with a pen and paper, answering the above question.
With that out of the way: I buy vouchers, because there is a physical retailer in my country that sells them and they are thankfully not hardcore affiliated with big tech yet. Previously, I used to pay with credit card, since PII is not saved it their payment tokens and even the tokens get deleted after six months, I believe it was.
If you need anonymity and you need to leave no trace of you having purchased Mullvad, use cash. Don’t forget to put on vinyl gloves. Withdraw a vastly different amount of money from the ATM than the cost of the subscription fee in question. Deposit the envelope at a postal office - or box - not in your neighborhood.
Edit: I just recalled, that I did try paying with cash once. Worked like a charm. Naturally, there was a delay.

5·13 hours agoSince it’s “open source”, we could start experimenting with our own circuitry, implementing the new Booleand logic: ANDD, ORD, XORD, NOTD and all that good stuff. See if we can tinker together a few instruction setsd.

37·2 days agoWhen I was a Japanese teacher at a university and ALL of the evaluation cards said “we want more of him”, “he really listens to his students” and so on. I was complete.
When I volunteered for a week at a shelter for children in Japan after the 3/11 earthquake and this one kid - perhaps 5 or 6 yrs old - and I became really good friends. Every smile, laughter and every other sign of joy of theirs made me feel like life was worth living.
When my Japanese ex wife told me that she’s grateful for me freeing her of the oppressive and toxic femininity norms that the Japanese countryside had indoctrinated her with since childhood. It felt like there is still hope.
When one of my clients (I’m a parole officer) started crying uncontrollably and told me that they never imagined that they would be met with kindness and compassion from the justice system. That felt like I actually could be the change I want to see in an otherwise increasingly inhumane justice system.
Also, good question. Thanks.

131·2 days agoIn my case - and this isn’t quite an answer to your question, but - I only have a problem with men. Too many men - not all, but enough of them - don’t mind their bodily hygiene, which I can find repulsive. This is not ideological but experience and prejudice on my side. I have the opposite prejudice - and experience - regarding women.
Which is to say: I love sex but I hate to fear whether my next romp is going to be in a bed of flowers or in the gutter.
PS: how interesting that I have an aversion to “the gutter” but at the same time have some other… edgy? kinks. 🤣

0·2 days agoI’m kind of the same, but trying to stay within the EU, since I’m based here. The easiest products to procure that are made locally are groceries. The absolute hardest are technical hardware, such as computer components.

I see. Thanks for the quick clarification! 😊
