That’s the exact same gene that also causes onions to be way overpowered and make them not like them. Source: have that gene
I don’t know why people think that it so narrowly impacts just the way that cilantro tastes. It actually has a broad impact across many different flavors. There’s a good chance that most of the adult picky eaters you’ve ever met are just people that carry this gene.
Onions aren’t the same, they have a mild flavor that blends with most everything. Cooking it with stuff can make them mostly disappear and just add a mild savory note. Eating caramelized onion on top is a strong flavor but most of the time it’s melded in.
And TOMATOES. What? I have personally met people who literally declare to the whole room that they’re allergic to tomatoes, then chow down on pizza or fries with ketchup.
I once knew a guy who claimed to be allergic to diced tomatoes specifically. Prepared other ways, cooked or raw, was fine. Just grow the fuck up for real.
Oh…now do the same meme but for blue cheese, cilantro, olives, kimchi, and sashimi!!!
Hating cilantro at least often comes with a good excuse. Maybe they have that gene that causes it to taste like soap.
Lousy kids didn’t learn to appreciate the taste of soap the way we had to

The cilantro one is genetic.
Don’t forget coffee and beer
Green tea, red wine, and cottage cheese too.

Raw tomatoes are disgusting, both in taste and texture. Blend them up, cook the ever-loving fuck out of them and they become delicious.
Raw tomatoes make me gag. I don’t no why. But there’s a huge difference between tomato sauce and tomatoes.
Agreed

Neither of those are as essential to food as onions though.
