Funny that in Chinese, I literally have always known it as 阿拉伯數字 (Arabic Numerals).

I’m starting to realize more and more how much the Chinese Language is just simply better at teaching concepts.

Disclaimer, I am ethnic Chinese, but I’m totally not biased at all :D

    Edit:

Also, while we’re on the topic of Numerals, teach Chinese Numbers as well, its literally one syllable per character, much easier to pronounce and remember.

English has become my primary language, but I still often find myself counting in Chinese (Cantonese).

They’re definitely known as Arabic numerals elsewhere too. It’s mentioned in Math class fairly early on when Roman numerals are also introduced. I’m sure that even in American schools, it’s mentioned that they’re called Arabic numerals.

Unless you mean that in Chinese there’s just no word for “numbers” and you have to use the name of the specific system?

I legit never heard the word sinophobia and I thought it was a trigonometry joke.

I guess we need a joke that combines math and racism then.

It’s the 0th cause of Indophobia?

subtraction rule only allows a smaller numeral to be placed before a larger one if it is one of the following combinations: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, or CM. The numeral ‘i’ ((1)) can only be placed before a ‘V’ ((5)) or an ‘X’ ((10)).

That rule wasn’t always hard and fast, just as IV or XL were sometimes written as IIII or XXXX respectively. The XVIII Legion was occasionally termed XIIX, which should have been right out, but it worked well enough to inscribe in stone on a memorial and use on official calendars.

The fundamental requirement was that People would look at it and understand what it is saying. There was no “Office of Numeral Oversight” correcting people. The norms that we may learn about are descriptive of the majority, but not strictly prescriptive for all the cases.

If it follows the basic additive/subtractive pattern, it’s good enough.

If you want to be a prick, write IMMMM

Maybe the symmetry made people more likely to overlook the conventional way of writing things. Still no hard rule, but more leniency if it looks cool.

A mate of mine had a sister who did her PhD in genetics in the early 2000s.

She went to a rally of stupid hippies, just to see if they had anything to actually say with their protests about whatever they were upset about at the time (Facebook and stuff didn’t exist then)

After they ranted and raved about how genetic modification was terrible, and jerked each other off, she put her hand up and asked if any of the unwashed crowd could tell her what the letters in DNA stood for

Silence. Not one of them had a fucking clue what they were actually arguing about

A new Home maker class featuring falafel and hummus as side dishes is now mandatory to graduate High school.

Homemade falafel and hummus is so much better than store bought and so easy. I just gotta perfect a pita recipe.

That reminds me of the old joke:

Customer: This coffee tastes like mud!

Waiter: I’m sorry sir, it was ground this morning.

I love falafel and hummus. I only found out a couple years ago but I’ve spent many a meal making up for lost time ♥️

Home made babaganoush is also amazing.

Slice a large eggplant in half, place face down in a glass baking pan. Add a few tablespoons oil, shake salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder lightly on top. Cover with lid and bake at 375° for an hour. Till skin is shriveled and darker. You can also uncover near the end and roast it more if you like.

Let it cool. Take each half and scrape the loose insides into a food processor, it should just all slide off the skin. Add a few cloves of garlic, some lemon juice (maybe 3 tableapoons or adjust to your tastes), then toast a layer of sesame seeds in a smaller pan 6 or 9 inch sized with a bit of oil. Stir them often because they will burn if the heat gets to them too long. Add to the food processor and blend till garlic and seeds are chopped fine. Salt and pepper to taste.

I’m not a fan of hummus, but I’d be down for that class anyways. Teach kids some delicious food, particularly foreign in origin, to show them the rest of the world has nice things too!

Until they pull a Britain and invade countries for their food…

And still somehow miraculously forget they can actually use the spices they invaded for in the first place…
